lieutenant colonel moshe mualem
Rachel, Moshe’s mother, says that when he was a boy he had an organized schedule for the day: come home, eat, do homework, and read a book. “I really love to talk about him and remember his smile. He was very responsible, humble, diligent and organized and he had a very rich childhood. I would take him to the movies often and he liked watching the classics: ‘Tarzan’, ‘Officer Azulay’ and others. He really loved to learn and further himself. He was a light unto the people and a father for his soldiers. I never thought that something like this could happen to him. When I heard about the tragedy on the television I told my husband, Yechezkel: ‘How will I not see him anymore? What will I do without him?’ Life changed. I laugh and smile, but inside, everything hurts.”
Shuli, his wife: “From the beginning, we had a strong connection. We found ways to reconcile the differences between us. Me as a religious woman and him as a secular man. At first I thought that he would just become religious, but we learned to respect one another and give one another their space. Me and the girls were the most important thing to him and he invested a lot in us. Until his last day, we would wake up in the morning and think about what to do to make the other one happy. We didn’t prepare for the possibility of him getting killed. Inside this dark thing that is called ‘Mualem’s death’, I am able to see points of light in everything that is connected to our good years together.”
