Staff Sergeant Yevgeny Timofeyev
Yevgeny immigrated, along with his mother, from the former Soviet Union at the age of 13. His brother Yuri, had arrived a year prior. From the beginning, Yuri says it was clear that Evgeny would serve as a combat soldier. “He waited breathlessly to be drafted,” said Yuri. “From the
first day he wanted to be in a combat unit. He was a real soldier. He loved the army, and what he was doing. He wasn’t afraid to go into Lebanon. He wanted to sign on for career service, but decided to give it up because it worried our mother too much.” Yevgeny dreamed of studying computers at university after his release from the IDF, and even established an Internet site where his friends published songs and stories of their experiences in the army. Yevgeny’s friends described him as a funny guy, and that he was “a man who looked like a boy.” “He loved electronic and hard rock music, and always asked me to teach him to play the guitar,” said Yuri. “What most saddens me is that I never had the time to teach him.”
Yevgeny was killed on August 13, 2006 by anti-tank missiles in southern Lebanon. He was 20 years old.
