Staff Sergeant Uri Grossman
He was to have celebrated his 21st birthday in two weeks. Uri studied at the experimental school in Jerusalem. He enlisted in the armored corps and realized is aim of being a tank commander. He was to have been released from the army in November, and was planning to tour the world and then to study theater. “On Friday evening, he spoke with his parents and sister by phone from Lebanon. He was happy that a cease-fire decision had been reached. He promised that he would have the next Shabbat dinner at home. Uri had a fantastic sense of humor, a huge soul, and was filled with life and feeling.” Uri was killed on August 13, 2006 by anti-tank missiles fired at troops operating in the Aita al-Shaab region. He was 20 years old.
*Uri Grossman was the son of noted Israeli author David Grossman. Two days before Uri’s death, his father and a number of other Israeli authors spoke at a press conference urging Israel’s government to work toward a cease-fire with Hezbollah. A cease-fire went into effect the day after Uri died.
