Staff Sergeant Shimon Dahan
Shimon’s cousin Kfir described how Shimon was “addicted” to the army. A few months earlier, Shimon had been sick and was forced to stay home on sick leave. “The whole time, he was itching to get back to his unit.” Friends said that he was thinking of signing on for career service, and was trying to decide whether to take a Unit Commanders’ course or an officers’ course. During his high school years “he very much enjoyed helping people when he would be home on vacation,” said Kfir. “He volunteered at a neighborhood charity organization, and helped deliver food to needed people. He recently called the organization to find out why they weren’t deducting his usual donation from his bank account.”
Shimon was killed on July 26, 2006 , along with 7 other soldiers, when his IDF battalion was ambushed during fierce fighting in the town of Bint J’beil, a Hizbullah stronghold in southeast Lebanon. He was 20 years old.
